A small business owner needs to take "charge" even if he/she is the only person working in the firm. Of course, taking charge is even more critical when you start building a staff.

I can tell the extent of the "taking charge"  happening in many small businesses, just by walking in the door. The key word in taking charge is "management".

• Management of self: Do you manage how you look in your work environment? Do you manage your time efficiently? How do you manage your commitment to a challenge? Do you mange your education so that you can be on the cutting edge of marketing for your industry. Do you manage you education so that you are up to date or better yet, leading your industry.
• Management of trust: Do you present an image of trust by your words and performance? Are you consistent so that customers, friends and staff will follow your lead?
• Management of vision: Do you present a compelling vision for your company and are you ready to take the necessary action to reach that vision?

As a small business owner you have to "be in charge" in all aspects of your business and personal life. You need to manage yourself so that your family and friends will give you their full support; you need to manage trust so that others will follow your lead. You need to manage your vision so that you can deliver what you promise to yourself, your family, your friends and your customers.
