Let Go to Grow
Hiring the first of your employees in a small business is, in many cases, a management nightmare. After all, this business is your baby and just like a newborn baby, you are afraid to let strangers hold the baby. They can drop the baby, forget to feed or change diapers; so much can go wrong.
The result is added work for the business owner as the new staff addition is being micromanaged. Often an owner thinks he can do a better job then the new employee; the feeling is that the new employee doesn't have quality and customer service that the business requires.
The result is that the owner comes in earlier than before and works later and helps the new employee do the job they were hired for as well as their own work. If you are able, both financially and work load wise, to hire a new staff person, here are a few rules to follow:
- write down the scope of work that the new employee will be required to do.
- write down the qualification ( work experience, education, etc) that is required to do the work
- review your personal and work values
- select your perspective employee based on your needs
- interview the prospect to find if your values are the same.
The next step is to let them "fly on their own". Be open to their ideas and suggestions. It may take the person a while to learn your systems so let them make a few mistakes.
The hiring process should not be done in a hurry.
