Treat yourself to a " Recovery Day"
First let's define a "Recovery Day"; It happens on a work day, it has to be spontaneous, and you leave your normal environment, home and work, for a full day.
Why Have it? As small business owners we often times get into a "rut". It becomes hard to focus on anything other than the work at hand and issues on the home front. Our thinking ceases to be creative and our enthusiasm starts to disappear. The problems in our life start to magnify and our accomplishments diminish.
A spontaneous Recovery Day clears your mind and gets you ready to look at all your current issues with "new eyes". Some may go away; for others, new solutions may appear when you get back to work the following day. And, there is always the possibility, that some of the items that worried you were not that important.
Where to go? My suggestion is to drive between two and three hours to a destination that you like or have not explored but have heard about. In most cases, this will take you out of your current work and life environment. Don't call your office, yes, let your staff and family know that you will be leaving for the day. Then, without a plan set forth on your adventure.
Do I go alone? You don't want to take someone from your work with you. If you enjoy the company of your wife or significant other and they can leave on the spur of the moment, extend an invitation. There is nothing wrong in being alone. Alone allows time for some deep thinking which we seldom can experience in our work and family environment. It gives us an opportunity to talk to ourselves and to come up with some significant answers and new ideas plus a renewed sense of purpose.
P.S. I had a recovery day yesterday; I left my Scottsdale office and drove to the Red Rocks of Sedona; what a great day!
