Work on your Story....

Had breakfast with a potential client this morning. I usually start a conversation with the following question; "tell me your story". The answer I received was along the following lines: I own a small business, we sell XXXXXXX and I have two employees. I waited for more, but that was the full extent of his story.

Tom Peters once said in one of his books, He/She who has the best story wins.

Story telling takes practice. A personal story has to have emotion, good content and make an impression on those who hear it. It has to have depth and it has to be sincere. The story I heard this morning lacked all the essentials of a good story.  We should be ready to tell our story every time we meet someone, be it a client, a prospect, or a friend.

The Who, What, Where, and Why words are good building blocks for a story. Apply this formula to your family story and your business story. Don't use big words, talk about positives, get excited and let your enthusiasm and pride show.

Write out your personal, family and business stories, read them and then make changes as needed. You may, just as in my case, combine the the stories into one. The next part is practicing your stories, they have to come from deep inside of you. This is your story, so take ownership of it.
